Exasol Analytics Engine (Exasol Cloud) BARC Review & Rating

This section contains our independent analyst views on Exasol Analytics Engine (Exasol Cloud).

Provider and product description

Exasol, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany, has evolved from an in-memory database pioneer to a cloud-native analytics platform provider. The company maintains a strong Euro-pean market presence and operates through a broad ecosystem of 100+ implementation and technology partners including BI specialists, systems integrators, resellers, and OEMs, while its active community develops integration capabilities based on a free open-source version available on GitHub.

One of its unique strengths lies in deployment flexibility: Exasol can be deployed as SaaS, in the customer’s cloud account, on premises, or as a local installation – addressing data sovereignty and regulatory require-ments particularly valued in Germany and broader European markets. Recent innovations include Exasol 8 Release 2025.2 introducing AI-native capabilities, and Exasol Personal, a free version extending high-performance analytics to individual users. The platform serves diverse use cases with data warehousing as the dominant scenario (90% of users), followed by self-service analytics and data discovery (30%), analytics acceleration, and sovereign AI/ML execution.

The Exasol platform was rebranded in 2025 and is now called Exasol Analytics Engine.

Exasol’s core technology foundation rests on an in-memory MPP (massively parallel processing) archi-tecture with self-optimization algorithms, delivering the exceptional 9.5/10 Performance score validated in The Data Fabric Survey 26. Its cloud-native design separates compute and storage for independent elastic scaling, with native AWS deployment and Azure/GCP support via VM installations. Four key differentiators set Exasol apart: First, Virtual Schemas enable data federation by providing read access to external data sources without ETL, transforming Exasol into a unified access layer across heterogeneous systems, which is particularly valuable in self-service analytics scenarios. Second, AI-native capabilities introduced in Release 2025.2 include Model Context Protocol (MCP) for connecting AI agents directly to data and Text AI for analyzing unstructured content like PDFs and presentations. Built-in machine learn-ing allows models to run directly in the database in any programming language, enabling deeper in-sights without data movement. And finally, a flexible plug-in architecture simplifies integration and func-tional expansion while the platform offers transparent licensing and engagement models.

In The Data Fabric Survey 26, Exasol Analytics Engine demonstrated exceptional performance within the Cloud Data Warehouses peer group based on 20 user responses. The platform achieved a near-perfect Performance score of 9.5/10, with 60% of users citing performance as a buying reason compared to just 23% across all surveyed products. User feedback reinforces this leadership: “The performance and cooperation are excellent” and “Good choice for high performance.” The company showed dramatic year-over-year improvements from The Cloud Data Platforms Survey 25, particularly in Price-to-Value (5.5 → 7.4, +35%), User Experience (3.8 → 7.6, +100%), and Scalability (6.7 → 8.3, +24%). These gains indicate successful resolution of prior pricing model concerns and UX investments. Business Benefits scored 7.2, remaining above average despite a slight decline from 7.9. 45% of users cited price-performance ratio as a buying reason versus 37% average, while connectivity to source systems and scalability also attracted a good proportion of buyers.

User sentiment reveals strong overall satisfaction, with 50% reporting no significant problems with the software—the highest rate in the peer group. However, challenges persist in specific areas. 25% of users cite high complexity in administration and operation, while stability concerns emerged around product updates, with one user noting: “Sometimes product updates are buggy.” Project length concerns also appeared at higher rates than peer averages. These operational friction points represent clear improvement opportunities for a vendor that has demonstrated strong responsiveness to user feedback.

Exasol Analytics Engine stands as a performance leader in the cloud data warehouse market, validated by near-perfect user ratings and the strongest performance-driven buying motivation in its peer group. The platform’s AI-native evolution positions it well for modern analytical workloads requiring speed, flexibility, and data sovereignty. Unique multi-deployment options spanning cloud, on-premises, and local installations address regulatory requirements in European markets where Exasol maintains a strong local presence and partner networks. Exceptional year-over-year improvements demonstrate vendor responsiveness, though continued attention to operational simplicity and update stability will be essential to match the platform’s performance excellence.

What do you like best?

Abrageperformance der Datenbank.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

(Nicht-)Verfügbarkeit von 3rd Party Integrations.

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

How would you sum up your experience?

What do you like best?

Fachlich: Kein Salesmarketing, keine leeren Versprechen.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

How would you sum up your experience?

Sehr erfolgreich.
